The boy, Werner Pfennig, is an orphan who shows a prolific mathematical ability, particularly in triangulation. The girl, Marie-Laure Leblanc, is blind, and forced to flee the bombing in Paris. It is interesting to see the ways the war changes them, and the things they are able to hold on to.
